AKC Trick Dog: Novice Foundations (Intro Class)
Looking for a fun, confidence-building way to train with your dog? AKC Trick Dog is a light-hearted, rewarding program that turns training into teamwork—and play into progress.
This one-hour introductory class is designed to help teams get started with the AKC Trick Dog Novice title. Dogs who already have their CGC (Canine Good Citizen) may use those skills toward their required total of 10 tricks, and in this class we’ll introduce and practice several common, achievable Novice-level tricks.
You and your dog will work through a variety of skills that may include:
Targeting and interaction games (touch it, hand signals, find it)
Body awareness and confidence skills (paws up, get on, balance beam, tunnel)
Fun performance tricks (spin, shake, high five, kiss, speak)
Practical behaviors (fetch it, hold, get your ___, kennel up)
While we won’t cover every possible trick in one hour, this class will:
Help you understand AKC Trick Dog rules and requirements
Teach clear training techniques for building and polishing tricks
Show you how to continue practicing and adding tricks at home
Build engagement, confidence, and communication between you and your dog
This class is perfect for dogs who enjoy learning, food or toy rewards, and trying new things—no prior trick training required! Whether your goal is to earn an AKC title or simply have fun showing off your dog’s skills, this class sets the foundation.

Confidence Quest: Calm, Curious & Courageous
Prerequisites: Dogs should be comfortable on leash around other dogs and current on vaccinations.
Help your dog discover their confidence through calm exploration and thoughtful, supportive guidance-centered training. In this one-hour class, you and your dog will work through a series of real-life confidence stations designed to build emotional resilience, curiosity, and trust—without overwhelming sensitive dogs.
Together, you’ll gently introduce your dog to new sights, sounds, movement, and textures through stations such as:
Investigating unfamiliar surfaces like tarps, cardboard, grates, and textured mats
Navigating calmly around mobility aids, including wheelchairs, walkers, and canes
Meeting people in varied appearances, such as hats, sunglasses, bulky coats, or pushing strollers
With positive reinforcement and clear communication, we’ll help your dog learn to slow down, observe, and make confident choices—turning moments of uncertainty into opportunities for growth.
Whether your dog is shy, sensitive, easily startled, or simply needs more practice navigating the world, this class offers a compassionate path toward becoming a calmer, more curious, and more courageous companion.
Fetch with Purpose: AKC Fetch® Intermediate & Advanced
This one-hour class designed for teams who have earned—or are ready to earn—their AKC Fetch Novice title and want to build the skills required for the higher-level tests.
As AKC Fetch® progresses, retrieving becomes more than a straight out-and-back game. Dogs are asked to respond to signals, retrieve from greater distances, and demonstrate memory and problem-solving skills when a bumper or ball is placed out of sight. This class focuses on developing those advanced skills in a supportive, step-by-step way that keeps dogs confident and engaged.
Using positive, real-life training methods, we’ll work on:
Transitioning from Novice retrieves to signal-based retrieves
Introducing and strengthening distance and directional cues
Building memory skills for retrieves placed or dropped behind barriers
Maintaining focus, enthusiasm, and teamwork at higher difficulty levels
Preparing teams for the pass/fail AKC Fetch Intermediate and Advanced test environment
This class is ideal for dogs who already enjoy retrieving and have a reliable Novice-level fetch but need practice with complexity, clarity, and confidence. Handlers will learn how to teach advanced retrieving concepts while preserving the joy and connection that make fetch such a powerful activity.
Dogs must be at least 6 months of age and registered or enrolled with the AKC (AKC, PAL, or Canine Partners) to earn official AKC Fetch titles.
This class continues your AKC Fetch pathway, helping teams build purposeful skills that support success in Intermediate and Advanced Fetch—and beyond.
Play with purpose. Train with heart. Fetch with intention
Fetch with Purpose: AKC Fetch® Novice Foundations
AKC Fetch® is all about strengthening the bond between you and your dog through one of the most loved games of all—fetch! This one-hour Intro to AKC Fetch® class is designed to prepare teams for the AKC Fetch Novice test while building joyful, purposeful retrieving skills.
In the Novice level, dogs demonstrate a basic retrieve by going out to get a thrown ball or bumper and returning it to their handler. While some dogs are natural retrievers, many benefit from learning how to retrieve thoughtfully, confidently, and consistently—and that’s where this class comes in.
Using positive, real-life training methods, we’ll focus on:
Building enthusiasm and clarity for the retrieve game
Teaching a clean pick-up and return
Encouraging engagement and teamwork during fetch
Helping handlers learn how to teach and reinforce retrieving skills effectively
Preparing dogs and handlers for the pass/fail AKC Fetch Novice test environment
AKC Fetch® is designed for all breeds and provides both physical exercise and mental enrichment. This class is ideal for dogs who enjoy toys, are curious about retrieving, or are working toward earning their AKC Fetch Novice title—which can also count toward the Gold level of AKC FIT DOG.
